Heart attack (ICD: I21-I25)

Heart attack (myocardial infarction), which is one of the most common causes of death in Germany with a rate of 7% and befalls around 300 of 100,000 of the population in Germany, is caused by the occlusion of a coronary artery or a vessel branch. This leads to damage to the tissue of the heart muscle. Beside age and hereditary factors, risk factors include smoking, elevated blood lipid values, high blood pressure, obesity, stress and lack of exercise. Typical symptoms are pain lasting more than five minutes or intense pressure in the chest - radiating into the shoulder, arm, mandible or upper abdomen - a feeling of restlessness ranging up to a fear of death, breaking into a cold sweat and paleness. These symptoms are often lacking in women, being replaced by nausea, frequent vomiting, pain in the shoulder region, jaw and upper abdomen.
